Virtual Tool Kit

Virtual Tool Kit

Although we cannot come together for the traditional Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Leadership Breakfast this year, Indiana University invites families, youth, and those young at heart to an at-home MLK Jr. Celebration experience! The Virtual Tool Kit features family-friendly activities and ideas for all ages. Pull out the pancake griddle and make “Orange” pancakes, “We Shall Over Come” omelets, and “I Have a Dream” oatmeal as your family gathers to celebrate Dr. King through stories and song on January 18, 2021.

Whether you’re planning to attend the social justice conference or you simply want to share how your family is taking time to celebrate Dr. King’s birthday, the MLK Virtual Tool Kit provides Facebook frames and other social media badges so your family can share how you are honoring Dr. King’s life and legacy with the hashtag #IUMLK.

...And before you finish eating breakfast in the morning, you’ve depended on more than half the world.

Virtual Unity Breakfast

Breakfast is a time to replenish our bodies with essential nutrients and vitamins so we can do the work of the day with strength and endurance. Similarly, gathering each year to reconnect and exchange creative ideas about how to create peace and justice for all is food for the soul, and we do this to honor the work, life, and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr.  Three hearty menu item ideas for your family on this MLK Jr. Celebration Day are sure to inspire hope for the journey toward a more equitable and just world for all.

'We Shall Overcome' performed by African American Choral Ensemble with alumni and IU faculty/staff guests, directed by Raymond Wise

We Shall Overcome:

We shall overcome.
We shall overcome.
We shall overcome, some day.

Oh, deep in my heart.
I do believe.
We shall overcome, some day.

We'll walk hand in hand.
We'll walk hand in hand.
We'll walk hand in hand, some day.

Oh, deep in my heart.
I do believe.
We shall walk hand in hand, some day.

We shall live in peace.
We shall live in peace.
We shall live in peace, some day.

Oh, deep in my heart.
I do believe.
We shall live in peace, some day.

We shall overcome.
We shall overcome.
We shall overcome someday.

Deep in my heart.
I do believe.
We shall overcome someday.

We’ll walk hand in hand.
We shall live in peace.

We must overcome.
We must overcome.
We must overcome today.
We can survive, no other way.
We must overcome today.

A Day On, Not a Day Off

Ideas to Honor the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

While we each must do our part to stay safe this year, IU Corps has provided some no-contact ways you can make it a Day On and Not a Day Off in honor of Dr. King.

Simple ways to give back on MLK Day, January 18, 2021:

  • Call an elderly neighbor to check in on them.
  • Contact a local non-profit and inquire about any upcoming outdoor clean-up day events.
  • Drop off a non-perishable donation to a local foodbank in your area.
  • Brighten someone’s day by writing letters to seniors who are living in care facilities.
  • Take up a collection of new and unopened hygiene items for a local homeless shelter.
